Juiced
None of us would be here without eros
I am broken open like the pomegranate
bleeding red pearls between your fingers
as you feed me blind folded in bed
Zing of sour,
hush of sweet,
the seed that wakes my insides,
a perfect pearl of a pill
to break open the heart
Deep red dots make my mouth salivate
The flowers growing from the rind sprout ovaries
This is life
The hearth where it all began
Where you and I and everyone we know were conceived
Where the magic swimmer made it
past the treacherous gate of cervical fertility inspectors
to meet the seed that became your skeleton
None of us would be here without eros
You wouldn’t be here breathing and laughing and
gazing at the hawk circling the blindingly blue sky
if it weren’t for the sensual body
Did you know that when a sperm meets an egg
there is a burst of light as bright as the sun?
So luminous it could blind any naked eye?
This is how your life began
Tell me that’s not a miracle,
holy flash,
meant to be.
You belong here
and how do any of us ever doubt it?
But, we will all be broken open by this life
Its how it was designed
We don’t make it out unbruised
The pomegranate of our human time was meant to be juiced and
We can only taste the nectar when we tear the skin apart
Dripping grapefruit half moons deliver the elixir
only when peeled
Piece by piece
Fiber by fiber
releasing the little burst of citrus in the air
when the nail breaks through the queens-bread
We are as alive as those juicy fruits
longing to be broken open
